Online scams: some tips on how to defend yourself

The four main consumer rights are: the right to product safety, to full information, to a free choice and to be heard. Often, however, especially in online transactions, not everything is as clear as it should be, and one often runs the risk of running into scams.

Suspicious e-mails, random links, false information, fake websites: these and many other things undermine our computer security, as do outdated passwords and careless consumers. The phenomenon of online scams is much more widespread than people think, with hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide every year.

However, there are some very simple guidelines to help you defend yourself. Nothing complicated, just a few behaviours to follow if you want to surf more safely. Here are some tips on how to arm yourself against online scams.

Trying to recognize where suspicious emails and messages are coming from
Most online scams are done via emails or phone calls, or we are asked to click on a link. The first thing to do, especially if we are asked for personal information, is to very carefully check the source, the name of the site or email, or search for the phone number on the Internet. At the slightest suspicion (perhaps you notice that the header of the email is written in a strange way, or the email itself seems to be written with a translator) do not send anything at all.

Check the sites on which you make online purchases
Here the moves to be made are really a lot. If you are not ordering on well-known sites, which in most cases guarantee security, you can check these aspects to see if the site is trustworthy: the presence of the https at the beginning of the URL, the presence of the padlock (indicating that the site is protected by security systems), the seller's data such as VAT and tax information, or look for reviews of other buyers on sites that share user experiences. If these details are missing or seem strange to you, do not proceed with the purchase.

Be careful how you handle documents and personal data
Always be careful when sending personal data. As a general rule, avoid sending anything of yours unless it is your friend, family member, acquaintance, work.

Be wary of anyone who rushes you
Most scams that happen online and beyond play on the sense of rush put on the consumer. "Reply now or your account will be blocked." "Please send this, your payment has failed." These are just two examples of online scams, and remember: in any legal context, you will always be given time for a failed payment and banking problems. Don't rush, take your time, especially where the digital world is concerned.

Don't trust those who promise quick and easy gains
Let's not beat around the bush, easy money do not exist, despite all the promises they may make to you. Bargain offers, strangely advantageous loans and suspicious proposals related to online trading are almost always scams, be careful and do not be naive, this is entirely up to you.

Update often password and software
Regularly updating password is crucial to ensure your online security (every one or two months would be ideal). In addition, it is also important that the pc software are updated to the latest version available. Especially the browser's software is essential to be up-to-date, because very important filters and security devices are added periodically. Deleting cookies is something that should be done often.

Contact law enforcement or professional associations when in doubt
As with normal crimes, online scams can also be reported to the police. If you are afraid that you have stumbled upon this kind of thing, filing a complaint and allowing the authorities to help you is a great way to try and save what can be saved. There are also many consumer associations that will give you more information on who to contact and what to do.
