Why the oceans are going green and why we should care

A study published recently in 'Nature' and conducted by a team of researchers from MIT, the National Oceanography Center, in collaboration with NASA and other institutions has drawn attention to the fact that the colour of the ocean is changing and climate change is to blame.

The change is said to have occurred over the past 20 years, with the colour of the ocean becoming greener in 56% of the cases that have been detected by satellite images.

The change in colour is said to be due to the fact that global warming is causing greater production of plankton, the colour of which has indeed become greener (the reason for which is currently unknown).

Researchers' hope
The hope of scholars is that this research will raise awareness for further work that can investigate the causes and effects that all these changes are causing.

Predictions arrived years earlier
According to Stephanie Dutkiewicz, seeing what is happening is not surprising but frightening. Especially for her, who has been following simulations for years that have predicted everything that is happening today.
