The five best universities in the world, the updated ranking

The twentieth edition of the QS World University Ranking has been released, which reports on the best universities around the world.

The ranking takes into account 1,500 institutions in 104 locations and is the only one of its kind to emphasise the value of employability and sustainability. This year, three parameters have been added to the criteria for evaluating universities: sustainability, employment results and international research network.

5. Stanford University
In fifth place in the QS World University Ranking is Stanford University, a private university in the United States located in California's Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1891.

4. Harvard University
In fourth place in the QS World University Ranking is Harvard University. It is a private US university, founded in 1636 and located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is part of the Ivy League and is the oldest university institution in the United States.

3. University of Oxford
In third place in the QS World University Ranking is the University of Oxford in England, the oldest university in the Anglo-Saxon world. Its foundation is uncertain but there is speculation that it may have already existed as early as 1096.

2. University of Cambridge
In second place in the QS World University Ranking is the University of Cambridge. It is the second largest university in the UK when the date of its foundation is taken into account. It was reportedly founded in 1209 by students who had fled from Oxford.

At the top of the QS World University Ranking is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is regarded as one of the world's leading research universities based in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA). MIT thus celebrates 12 years at the top of the ranking.
