Five most famous swords in film history

Sword fighting has been the staple of human battles for many centuries. Replaced now by the power of firearms, the glory of blades remains today only on the silver screen, thanks to the films of the masters of cinema.

Some of these films have given history swords that have now become immortal, hailed by dogfighters, and not only, all over the world for their beauty, power or legend. Something about sword fighting still fascinates today, amidst memories of Vikings, soldiers and samurai.

In this short guide, we want to show you what are, on balance, the five most famous swords in film history. Impossible not to have seen them all at least once

Excalibur - The Sword in the Stone (1963)
Excalibur is present in ancient legends as well as in many other works for film and TV, but here we have chosen to present it to you in one of its most famous forms, in the Disney film 'The Sword in the Stone', where the young Wart (King Arthur), is trained by the eccentric Wizard Merlin in the use of magic but above all in the knowledge of the world and himself. Having become a squire and in search of a sword for the upcoming joust, Wart picks up a random sword embedded in a rock in the centre of the village and will henceforth be known as Arthur, King of Camelot.

The Sword of William Wallace - Braveheart (1995)
"Freeeeeeeedooommmmm". If you read it in Mel Gibson's voice in Braveheart, then we are on the right track. The film tells the fictionalised story of Scottish patriot William Wallace, and is also said to have played an undirected role in the resurgence of Scottish nationalism that led, a few years after the film's release, to the formation of the parliament.

The lightsaber - Star Wars (first appearance "A New Hope," 1977)
However, if we think of an iconic sword in film history, it is impossible not to think first of the lightsaber, a sword made of energy generated by Kyber crystals that is part of the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. About 91cm long and with a hilt of 27, it is used by both Jedi (light side of the Force) and Sith (dark side of the Force). Also iconic is the sound of this weapon, which is impossible to replicate.
