Earth's core would be coming to a halt: study shows how this is nothing new

Research by two Chinese scientists seems to have shown how the Earth's core is slowly slowing its rotation. Obviously it will not come to be "stationary" as we understand it, but it will over time come to reverse its rotation.

A phenomenon that seems to occur every 70 years, and which should not have any kind of effect on our everyday lives. However, the scientific community seems to be divided on the matter. The analysis of what is happening has been done through the study of seismic waves.

The phenomenon however is very mysterious, and according to some scientists it may instead have slight effects, though nothing catastrophic.

Section of the Earth with its core
A study by two Chinese scientists, Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song, both from Peking University, has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience. According to that study, the Earth's core has been slowing down in recent decades, and is preparing to reverse its axis of rotation.

What does it mean that the Earth's core is stopping
One should not be fooled by the word. The earth's core will not stop as we understand it, that is, by stopping its own rotational motion. Speaking scientifically, it is meant that the earth's core will come to align its rotation with the direction of the planet, on the same axis and at the same speed.

How the Earth's core is formed
Beneath the Earth's crust are the upper mantle and the lower mantle. Below them are the outer core and the inner core, the deepest part of the planet. The innermost part should be composed of an iron-nickel alloy, and have a temperature similar to that of the solar surface. (See: "Differential PkiKP travel times and the radius of the core").

A phenomenon that is not new
According to recent studies, this is not a new phenomenon for our planet, but it would repeat cyclically every 65-70 years, so with changes in direction every 30-35 years.

The effects on our planet
In the present state of affairs, scientists believe it is unlikely that phenomena will occur that will affect our daily lives. It seems that the length of the day may undergo some changes, as well as sea levels and climate. Further studies will be needed, but in any case, even if there were, the effects would be very slight indeed.
