2003 – Pioneer 10 interrupts communications
The Pioneer 10 space probe was launched on March 3, 1972 from Cape Canaveral, in Florida. It was the first spacecraft to cross the asteroid belt. The photographic exploration of Jupiter produced about 500 images. During the mission, onboard instruments were used to study the asteroid belt, the environment around Jupiter, the solar wind, cosmic rays and, finally, the boundaries of the Solar System and heliosphere. Radio communications were disrupted due to the loss of electrical power from the radio transmitter, with the spacecraft at a distance of 12 billion kilometers (80 AU) from Earth.
